(Posted by: My baby boy Westley is here :) on 2012-02-10 12:21:35)
I've got 8 now (20 weeks and just found out its a boy yesterday!) So I'm starting my "nesting " and preparing for baby. How many bottles should I buy so I'm ready for when he gets here. |

None! Instead educate yourself about breastfeeding and give that a whirl when he is born. Trust me, breastfeeding is sooo much more convenient and it's free. If you want to do combo breast and bottle, then 8 bottles is plenty. Congrats on your boy! |

Is there some reason you already know you will be unable to breastfeed? If you'll be breastfeeding (and I hope you will -- DO educate yourslf about the risks of formula before you make a final decision) you don't need ANY bottles. If you can't breastfeed or have made an educated choice to give formula -- you can manage fine with 2-3 bottles. Or you might want a few more. 8 sounsd MORE than ample if you have access to a sink so can wash bottles. EDIT: Double Trouble (and a few others) nobody has been bashed. VERY few women truly cannot breastfeed. MANY women make the choice to not breastfeed, often based on incorrect information (i.e., 'formula is just as good', 'breastfeeding hurts.' 'I can't breasfeed if I need to take medication/ go back to work/ have older kids/ etc.' Mothers SHOULD make educated choices about things that are important to the long term health and well-being of their children. |

8's plenty. Also, get some distilled water (more hygienic and healthier) I'm not sure where you buy them from (chemists I think) but I got given a heap from the hospital and my mum got me the rest. It's better than cooled boiled water. You don't need to salt-sterilize the teats and they just decay them anyway, just a tub to wash the bottles separately and a bottle brush or 2 and a bottle warmer. Congratulations |

Ignore the breastfeeding morons. if you want to bottle feed there is nothing at all wrong with that. 8 is plenty for now anyways! |

I would actually buy a few of several different brands. We had 3 different brands for our 1st son (gifts that we received) and it ended up that two of the brands he wouldn't take. So out of three different brands he would only drink out of one. AVENT is the one he ended up drinking out of and I loved that brand. You don't really need a lot of begin with. We started out with 4 and then added on. |

I plan to breastfeed my little man like I did my daughter and I like to have a pack on hand (usually a pack of 3 bottles and your gonna want to buy the small 5oz bottles not the large 10 oz ones) because they only eat 2-3 oz when they are newborns. If you plant to breastfeed make sure you get the bottles that state they are like the breast (referring to nipple shape) and buy a breast pump their will be times when your baby will fall asleep and your breast will hurt and you will need to pump the milk then you can use the bottles to feed the child the pumped milk. I say only get 1 small pack of bottles because sometimes the baby wont take to a certain brand so you want to be sure and not waste your money on alot of bottles that may not ever get used. Experiment with one brand first. by the way the 8 bottles are way more then you need I wouldn't buy anymore. |

8-12 should do you for a whole day and minimize the time you spend in the kitchen washing them, i used 8 a day when he was younger, now i use 4 per day, |

8 will be enough. That's how many we had. Ignore the breast feeding preachers! So rude. It's your choice how you feed your child. |

4 infant bottles and 6 large bottles is a good stash. As long as you'll be washing them all the time then you won't need a lot. Also, the little formula bottles that you get in the hospital, keep them. I would rinse mine out and use them the first couple of months.I also loaded up on the ones filled with formula. I would take one or two and stash in my suitcase everytime they brought my kids in my room. It's nice to have for those first few days that your home from the hospital, and for things like outtings. It's the perfect amount of formula. Congratulations on your little boy! |

Do give breastfeeding a try! it is so much easier and healthier than bottles. You should buy different brands and styles of bottles, 1 each, and not too many, to see which one works best for your baby. Dr. browns, Playtex (the ones with latex nipples worked the best for my breastfeeding son) and avent are a few higher rated brands. Just because you researched the best baby bottles does not mean your child will like drinking from them. Some arent picky, others are. Some get more colic than others. The right one is the one that works best for your baby. |

Since you already decided to not breastfeed, I would say to purchase 10 4oz bottles and 12 8oz bottles. Then as you lose them, you can buy more. |

Even before I clicked on your question, I already knew the breast feeding mums would be out to bash you. lol (Don't worry, all formula feeding mums get bashed at sometime or other on this site!) I've been insulted time and time again for supposedly 'choosing' to breast feed. I got so sick and tired of explaining exactly why I was unable to breastfeed, in the end, I thought - it's no one's damn business how I feed my baby. Whether it's through choice or not......I love my children more than anyone can know! And that's what's important Anyway, to actually answer your question, which a couple of your 'answers' HAVEN'T done. 8 bottles really is plenty, hun! I only bought 6 for my son when I had him. Most probably because sterilizers usually only fit 6 bottles per cycle. And since newborns feed like every 3 hours.......you'll be washing them up in no time anyway. No need to buy any more. Good luck hun! Hope I made you feel a little better! ;-) EDIT: @ Pippin - At the end of the day......instead of actually answering the question, you went straight on to 'breastfeeding'! The questioner didn't ask anything about breastfeeding, yet you felt the need to bring it up! Just answer the girls question, like she asked?!?!?!?!???? PMSL |
