The infant carseats will go up to 12 months in many cases but it mainly goes by weight and height. It will hold 20 lbs max after that point you need a convertible carseat that goes rearfacing until 35 lbs. My boys were 12 months when they hit the 20 lb mark.

Are you asking how long a baby will typically fit in an infant carseat or what the actual usable life of a carseat is? Most babies will fit in your average infant seat for about 6 months, then will need to be switched over to a rear facing convertible seat. But of course it depends on what seat you buy and how your baby grows. A rear facing seat is outgrown when the baby reaches the weight limit (varies by seat, check your manual) OR when there is less than 1 " of hard shell over the top of baby 's head. Most carseats have an expiration date of 5 years after the date of manufacture, though it depends on the maker of your seat so check your manual. This means that the carseat can be used from the time it is bought to 5 years after the date of manufacture.

It depends on the car seat. Read the manual - it will tell you what height/ weight limits it has.

Most actually go higher than 20lbs but it depends on how your child fits. It 's a comfort and safety thing. Both my daughters didn 't hit 20lbs until one year but they are so tall (their father is over 6 feet) that they didn 't fit well so we went to a big REAR FACING car seat at about 7 months. Other people use them until 9 months or even a year.

The car seat will provide the weight and lenghth range it is good for. you must have your baby rear facing until 1 year and 20lbs if i remember right. most infant carriers seemed to have designed their seat to try to last that long. i think my carrier goes up to 25 or 30lbs. if your baby out grows the weight/ length recommendation for the infant carrier before 1 year you would want to find a convertable carseat that will start off rear facing and then turn to front facing when the child is old enough. my brother had to get rid of their infant carrier at about 6 months, but their daughter is also wearing 18 month old clothes at 7 months. judging by my 3 months old size and growth rate i might make it to 10-12 months with mine. all babies are different and grow differently.

The car seat itself is good for 6-10 years depending on what its made out of and local laws. That 's from the date it was made, not the date of purchase. If you 're asking when a baby will be too big for an infant only carrier, that depends. Usually between 3-15 months a baby will become too tall or too heavy to safely use an infant only carrier. Most infant seats are good for 22lbs and varying heights, one infant only restraint goes up to 30lbs. Other types of car seats can be used rear-facing up to 30-60lbs -largely depending on where you live. In Canada its currently not allowed for seats to list anything higher than 35lbs for rear-facing. In the US I believe up to 40lbs is allowed, though most seats are approved only up to 35lbs rear facing. In some parts of Europe most seats are approved for 25-30kg (about 55-60 lbs) My first outgrew the infant carrier at 4.4 months. My second hated it and we replaced it by 3 months with a convertible seat.

We knew we were going to have tall babies so I researched it to death and found the Graco Infant Safe Seat was the largest on the market at the time (as far as infant carriers go). My way-off-the-charts girl was in it for 14 months. She was 22.5 " at birth and always stayed WAY over the 97th %-ile. I didn 't lift the seat in and out of the car with her in it, that would have been too heavy, but it was her seat for 14 months. My 75 %ile 21 mo. old is still riding in it. Again, I don 't carry her in it, but it is her carseat. ETA: the height/ weight limits on it are 32 " and 30 lbs.
