What's with the bumbo baby chair?? i don't agree with this?

Question: What's with the bumbo baby chair?? i don't agree with this?

(Posted by: on 2009-12-11 15:56:33)

Im 31 weeks pregnant and my friend has a 3 month old baby .. shes giving me alot of advice and telling me things what and what not to do lol starting to drive me insane.!! but now her baby girl is 3 months old she has brought this bumbo chair to help teach her baby girl to sit up.. and goes on AND on about how this chair is award wining number one best thing for baby and how it stops her baby& #039;s hips from going outta place because she has been told that when baby& #039;s are learning to sit up there hips can move out of place and they wont be able to walk, .. i hate the fact she is forcing her 3 month old to sit up with this chair .. i feel its un natural to do this.. whats your thoughts based on this matter... http:/ / s889.photobucket.com/ albums/ ac94/ yasmine228/ ?action=view& amp;current=babyinbumbochair2monthsold.jpg

You know, my sister has it for her niece who should be sitting up by now - and she is improving because of the chair. For the infants who need them, it 's a very good thing.

I don 't think it 's unnatural or anything, but it 's not absolutely necessary either. I never had one, and my daughter is just fine. Started walking at 9 months too. To each their own, if she feels like it 's a life saver to her and her child then that 's fine. But you may not need it. ♥

In all honesty if the baby isn 't screaming because she hates the chair then she isn 't really being "forced " to do something she doesn 't like? It never hurts to assist and encourage young ones to use and strengthen their muscles, in fact it is good for them. I was going to get one of these chairs but here they are $80 and after spending $150 on her swing and $50 on her floor play gym to help her like being on the floor more we can 't really afford it at the moment, but my baby really likes sitting up much more then she likes laying down she just can 't do it on her own yet which is why I considered it. [Edit] I wish I lived in the US but I don 't I live in aust so here they aren 't as cheap :(

Why it may help the baby learn to sit up (and i do think your friend has taken it a little far..) it is very useful i bought one for my son for christmas he is only 10 weeks old right now but will be old enough to use it when Christmas comes around. I wil use it to feed him for awhile you can use it up to a year. You can buy a tray that goes on so you can have them in the kitchen with you while you cook or are doing something and they will be safe and entertained. I 'm excited for him to be old enough to go in it also there only 35 dollars at Target or 40 at walmart

Obviously it 's not necessary or they wouldn 't have just come out. I had one and loved it but I never used it to help my baby learn how to sit up. My baby hated laying down and before he could sit up on his own, this seat allowed him to be in sitting position which made him very happy. Around 4 1/ 2 months when he was starting to sit up on his own, we actually tried to cut down on the time he was in the chair because we felt it would hinder his learning how to sit up. He was completely unassisted by 5 months but I feel it was more because we took the chair away than the chair helping him learn how to sit.

Bumbo 's don 't teach babies to sit up, but what they do is provide a safe way for a baby (who can already hold head up and support his weight himself) to sit upright and not keep toppling over. They are used for those inbetweeny months where they aren 't quite ready to sit alone. they are also great for the nosy babies who always want to be watching what goes on. And as babies need to be moved around having different options like bouncer, bumboo ect it stops them being in the same thing all day. Get one, they are great. Remember- Baby should not be in there for hours on end NEVER put them on countertops/ tables, no matter how stable they look- babies do fall out! :-)

Of course, children will get by without sitting in Bumbo chairs - they 're not essential to proper development by any means, but I doubt it 's hurting her 3 month old, so I don 't see why you 're so up in arms about it. Obviously, no baby needs a Bumbo seat to learn how to sit properly. It 's not going to hurt her baby, though. They have been found helpful for children who have certain disabilities, actually. They 're great for children who need to be upright often, too, like children with ear drainage or reflux.

I think they 're fantastic. My son wanted to sit up and look around far sooner than he was able to support himself. He loved his Bumbo, and sat in it as soon as he could hold his head steadily. He sat in it until he was stable enough to sit on his own. They just get bored staring at the ceiling all the time. I don 't think there is any magical benefit for the baby 's hips - I 've never heard of a baby who couldn 't walk because of a sitting injury. (I 'm a nurse.)

Its not unnatural for her to do this. Babies learn to do things by putting them in situations where they need to do it. For example...putting a baby on its tummy helps them learn to life their heads and support it. They will eventually get it without doing this, but it can take longer. The chair will help her to sit up and she may learn to do this faster. It also provides a safe place for her to do it. That being said, I think they are a waste of money. There are much cheaper items that will do the same thing. I dont have one because I wont pay $65 for a chair. If however you can afford one or get one as a gift then thats great.

I 'm not sure if it helps with anything for a child..... but my son has a bumbo and started using it around 3 months old and hes 10 months old now and has always loved it.... its been a life saver for me.

I 'm guessing the problem is not really about the Bumbo being a device that makes babies sit up so early, but that she is raving excessively about it! I 've had a close look at them and I 'm not convinced that they are good enough to warrant the price tag on them- they might be worth it if you have a slow developer, but a normal kid does not need one, and you do not use them for very long. My son is only seven and a half months and he is too big for them, so I don 't regret not buying one.
