Question: Personal must have baby items....?
(Posted by: Noemie's coming 12/10/10!! on 2010-08-24 07:57:57)
OK so im 24 weeks pregnant and im having a girl but i want to start shopping and getting things with each paycheck so im not shelling all the money out at once when she comes lol. So for all you mommies, what was the one item or items that were a must have when you had your baby? Also things like toys and pacifiers and non essentials...your favorite brands and specific products. Anything you would reccomend to me as a young, first time mommy? |

With a brand new newborn you really don 't NEED a lot of stuff, especially if you 're going to breastfeed. And anything you do discover that you need you can get later... I 'd advise you get needed stuff first, you can always buy other stuff later (so don 't feel stressed that you need everything now!) Burp Rags Diapers Changing Table Cradle or something like it Swaddle wrap or blanket you swaddle a baby with Car seat -you have to have this to leave the hospital! As far as what we needed right at first... Lots of burp rags! lol -Not kidding! I had one pack of 12 cloth diapers and we were running out every 2 or three days, and doing lots of laundry just to wash them. I now have 2 packs and it 's much better. Also newborn diapers -a tip, huggies newborn diapers suck! We had a lot of leaks with those. The pampers newborn size are much better. A changing table is great to have, it 's convenient to have everything in one place. My dad made us a cradle, but you need something for them to sleep in at first if you don 't plan on putting the baby in a crib yet and want him/ her to room in with you. You don 't need any bedding except a fitted sheet at first. Anything extra in the baby 's bed other than a fitted sheet increases the risk for SIDS. We put or son in a diaper and a swaddle wrap for bed, the swaddle keeps him from startling himself awake but we live where it 's hot so I don 't want him in too much clothing for bed. My favorite is this kind, toysrus.com/ product/ index.jsp?productId= 3726434 it 's very easy to use. We also have a bouncy seat that my son didn 't seem too interested in at first but now he loves it. This is like the one we have, toysrus.com/ product/ index.jsp?productId= 4230353 Anyway, not all of that is necessary to have right at first but helpful. Hope you have fun shopping for baby, and don 't stress out! :-) |

I 'm 24 weeks too. I 've just bought mostly the big items. Got a new pram, car seat, baby changing unit, crib, some toys, a cradle swinger. I 've also bought some dresses for her and lotsss of baby grows. Still need to get the room sorted which will cost a lot but there 's always time after the birth too :) Good idea on not spending all at once! xx |

Diaper Genie 2 Elite - If you get a Diaper Genie at all, make sure it 's this one! My SIL has a regular on and I think it sucks and she has actually stopped using it altogether. And my BIL and his wife have just a Diaper Genie 2 (not Elite) and I don 't like it either. But ours is great. Shopping cart cover - This is something that was given to us as a gift at our baby shower and I didn 't think we would get much use out of it for some reason. But we use it every time we go to the store as it keeps our girl from touching the nasty shopping carts and protects her from the sharp metal edges. It also doubles as a highchair cover for when you go out. Exersaucer - We started putting Ari in this around 4 months and she has always loved it. I think it has helped strengthen her back and legs and it 's great for when you need to vaccuum or do some other chore. |

Hey i am a dad thank you very much that was not just to moms.... anyway... pacifiers are not the way to go if you ask me... my son didnt use one at all and he is fine... things to must have.... rocker.... bike stroller seat.... extra car seat.... tons and tons of (even future sizes) diapers and wipes... (it gets old having to go get them).... baby socks... little noisy things to put on her wrists so she learns she has arms and legs that much faster... GET A FRIKIN BABY BOOK and throw so much stuff into it it turns into a storage tub full... dissolving tylonal for kids... vitamins not essential but good.... pediasure is cool too.... portable roll up changing thinger..... for the first year if its cold outside just f-ing put her in a fur purse its better than buying 27 different coats that really honestly do not keep babies warm... all around protection a purse or a bag preferably fur though... lol i think i might be going a little overboard.... |

For me i preferred the avent wide bottles. Must have the bouncer seat. For us it was good when my daughter wanted to nap, we would let her sit there so she was still right by us. |

Muslin cloths. Loads of them (24 at very least). And bibs. Can 't manage without them. Buy things each week with your usual shopping and then you won 't notice the extra spend so much after baby is born. I 'd suggest stocking up on consumables like cotton wool, baby bath/ lotion, baby wipes, nappy sacks, baby powder, etc, preferably when they 're on special. If you 're planning to bottle feed then don 't buy too much baby milk in advance, because you don 't know which milk will suit your baby, and don 't buy too many nappies in advance because they grow quickly and don 't stay in any one size for long. |

A nursing pillow and udder cover (go to google and search udder cover) if you are planning on nursing. If not and you plan on bottle feeding i prefer Playtex bottles with drop ins. they are so much easier to use and my children took to them easily even though they were nursed. A baby swing, fisher price ones are good because they can swing 2 different ways (front to back and side to side). Also a tummy time mat they have plenty of brands that are good you can just pick out which theme you like. That 's all the stuff i used when they are small. To save money you can get all these items at Walmart or Target. good luck and congrats! |

*A swing, i had one by Fisher Price, i like the ones that swing both directions. *A boppy is great even if you don 't breast feed. You can lay them in there to play, or even sleep. They just come in handy. *A bouncer with a soothing vibrater. *Lots of blankets and lots of bibs!! You can 't have enough because you will go though tons each day, and you wont want to do laundry daily. *A swaddler...it 's a blaket that velcros to help swaddle the baby better, it 's a lifesaver. *I loved the Playtex pacifiers..maybe because my daugher did lol but they are a great quality and never had any problems with them. Prefer them over Gerber. *Playtex Drop Ins are the best (IMO) they have sterile liners that you put it, so it makes cleaning the bottles a breeze. *A car mirror! I had to have one of these and my daughter is still rear facing and we still use it! I like the one made by Safe Fit (think that 's the name) from Babies R Us, it has a remote so you can play music and it has a light so you can see them at night if you have to. *A travel system is good to have, but you always have a nice lightweight stroller. Trust me, you will be glad you bought it! I have a Maclaren and it 's the best purchase i made! |

I did the same thing as you. Paycheck by paycheck I did a little shopping. I mostly only bought the bigger things first. Like the crib and the carseat and stroller set and his baby swing. I bought a Liberty Convertible 4-in one crib. The carseat and the stroller set I think were Safety First as well as his baby swing. I then bought his clothes and the must have item for me was his ninny 's. Another life saver is a swaddle blanket. He sleeps well with that Edit: wow people like to thumbs down today. she wanted our opinion on what we used and what we think we she recommend to her. how is what worked for our child wrong and deserve a thumbs down?? |

1 thing I must have, an infant sling. Most newborns always want to be held. This is the only way I get things done around the house. Your arms are free to do as you please, and baby is comfy, maybe even sleeping. Another thing I like is the bouncer, its a good place to set them down as newborns, other than the bassinette. I use NUK Orthodontic bottles, love 'em, shaped like a paci, and they have a great 'air system, I found to reduce Zoe-Anne 's colic. Oh and another great must have is some Ovol or Mylicon gas drops, works wonders for those stubborn gasses! Good luck & congrats on your first. |

MOBY wrap. I have 4 children and never found a carrier that I liked with my other kids. I love being able to hold my baby and still have my hands free to get things done. |

I 'm a recent first time mom of a 4 week old baby girl. I also bought items over time before she was born which helped immensely. I found out that the must have items were at least 10 to 12 bottles, if you 're bottle feeding, newborn diapers, a pack n play with an attachable bassinet is a fantastic item to have. Also plenty of burpy cloths, and bibs. As far as clothes go, I 'd buy newborn sizes to start out with. They cover from 5 to 8lbs and up to 20 " in length. I bought too many 0-3 months and they 're way too big. It 'll probably be 3 more months before she can wear those. These are the essentials, everything else can pretty much wait until after she 's born. |
