Question: My baby has outgrown his baby walker?
(Posted by: tracy b on 2009-08-01 00:33:04)
My 10 month old baby boy has outgrown his baby walker now and as he cant walk and is only just mastering how to crawl on his stomach, i don& #039;t know what to do, does anyone have any suggestions my baby does spend more time out of his walker than in it, but he does love whizzing around after us, i was just merely asking the question |

Ignore the idiot who said walkers are for lazy mums , we got our daughter one at 4 months because she was desperate to move her legs about and she loved it. We got her doing tummy time from 6 months & placed toys out of reach which she eventually managed to tummy crawl to, we kept up and by 8 months she was on all fours & pulling herself up on furniture, from then I 'd encourage her to walk by holding her hands & at first she 'd bounce on her tippy toes then by 10 months she could walk along holding one hand before hoisting herself up and taking those first steps alone. If I were you i 'd take the walker away now and concentrate on encouraging him to master pulling himself up and crawl on all fours, its all about strengthening the muscles enough so he feels confident enough to use them. |

Suggestions - Yes! Let him crawl and then learn to walk........... Sorry, but baby walkers are the lazy mum 's excuse for delaying development and a movable prison for the kid |

Walkers are so bad...they should be taken off the market! not only do they injure tons of babies every year, they can actually hinder development. take the poor guy out and let him play freely! |

I agree with the other posters: the walker has done more harm than good. Let him develop on his own. Just keep your home relatively baby-safe (cushion hard corners and whatnot) and take him out to play with other children close to his age--it 's amazing what a baby will do when he/ she wants to keep up with other kids. Other than that, I can 't think of anything. Let your kid be a kid, not a doll; walkers have been shown to hinder leg development in babies and adversely affect physical development. You could have spent the same amount of money on a collapsible 'play barrier ' and you wouldn 't have had to ask this question in the first place. I 'm sure your baby will be fine if you just let him explore his world as he 's supposed to. ^_^ Good luck! |

Put him down on the floor with some cushions around him in case he falls over and give him plenty of toys to play with. in time you will see him trying to crawl and when you lease expect it he will start to pull himself up against something. |

The next step for my son at this age was Vtech first steps baby walker, he loved it, still does, and it got him walking in no time at all, definately worth buying, lots of places stock it vtechuk.com/ products-and-accessories/ first-steps-baby-walker/ Add: ignore the "walkers are bad " parade, they are talking about old style walkers where it was a metal frame with a bit of fabric on it and all the wheels swiveled, they are better made now, and obviously you dont leave your son in it for hours at a time, my son used a walker from about 6-9mths, walked at 12 mths it didnt do him any harm at all |

You can do all sorts of things. FYI: some babies never crawl- they just start walking so dont worry. And since he is use to the walker he more then likely has the leg strength to start standing. Encourage him to play standing up, use an activity table. I also got my sons toys that he can push around- I have a train and a truck and its design to help babies to learn to walk. They have them at toys r us & walmart. But ignore all of those rude comments about walkers are bad. My son was in a jumper at 3mths, in the walker around 6mths and now he is already running at hes not even 1. Just remember all kids are unique, so if your son is not walking or crawling at a certain age then its fine unless at his 9mth check up your doctor said something to you. What else I did is let him stand up holding onto you and then you slowly back away so he is standing on his own, and then hold out your arms and see if he will take a step towards you (make sure your only like a step away from him, because he will most likely fall towards you in the beginnning. |
