Question: Baby wrap sling suggestions?
(Posted by: PUREfect Your Skin on 2008-08-25 13:52:40)
I am looking into getting a baby wrap/ sling to wear, I was told they are very comfortable and make breastfeeding in public much easier. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to get the best ones, I am looking for a more neutral colored one, or one without a pattern so that my husband can use it as well. |

I have bought, tried on, and messed with just about every baby carrier out there! I 've bought (and returned most) no less than 10! Some stats about me: 5 '7 " about 170 lbs, large breasted and had a large (9lb) baby. My husband is 5 '11 " and fit with a bit of a belly. I tell you this because some carriers work better with different body types. MY FAVORITE IS THE SLEEPYWRAP . . . why you might ask? ** Inexpensive at only 40 bucks out the door compared to 80 or 100 that I 've paid for other carriers. ** Easy to wash - wash in cold, dry on low and it looks great! ** Elastic in the fabric makes it super easy to get a good fit. ** My son literally falls asleep and you can tuck his head in the shoulder strap (facing out) so that it doesn 't bounce around like a bobble head doll! ** Love the color selection - I got black and will probably get another one in a more fun color so that I can always have one in my car. ** Comes with a carrying sack that fits easily in my (smaller) diaper bag. No way the Bjorn will fit! ** You could nurse in this while baby is strapped in (depending on your shirt and accessibility) - or it makes a useable cover for nursing. ** I don 't think that my husband will be using it because it 's not masculine enough for him - but I love it!! ** The directions for wrapping look a little complicated - but I had it wrapped and my son strapped in in under 4 minutes my first time. With practice, it takes me about 30 seconds to wrap, and 15 seconds to insert baby! As mentioned before, the baby bjorn is a nice carrier - expensive - but nice. And I still have mine becuase my husband prefered using it when our son was less than 16 lbs. It 's hard for a breastfeeding mom because the straps come directly across your sometimes full boobs. I found it impossible. The other thing to consider is that your baby "hangs " in front of you - for boy babies, that 's a lot of pressure on their "stuff. " I have a maitai carrier and really like it. I carry my now 20 lb son in it forward facing with only slight pain after a couple of hours. The only thing that I didn 't like about it were the washing instructions - line dry and wash only as needed. It 's durable and I 've enjoyed it! I tried a maya sling and took it back because my shoulder hurt after carring for about 30 minutes. I had a sales consultant show me how to use it with my baby at the store so I 'm pretty confident that my technique was correct. I tried a couple of different slings from Babies R Us and I always experienced pain in my shoulder and back (again heavy baby). I tried a hotsling and returned it because there was no stretch to allow for a growing baby. Again had all the weight on your shoulder. Good luck in trying to find the perfect carrier for you and your family. |

I can 't really advise you in a sling, but I 've had a BabyBjorn Air since my son was 3 months old, and it 's great. Yes, after long periods of time it starts to wear on your back, but it 's so worth it for shopping, and I think he feels very safe in it. |

I 've got a wrap sling and i love it... i live in france and i know a chain store here that carries them for a relatively good price. but i 've seen them on many on-line stores as well, try this one: wrapyourbaby.com they also show you how to do all the different positions for newborns etc. you can totally make one yourself too... all you need is about 5 meters of fabric, that way you can choose the color you like. good luck |

My baby loves being carried around. I often carry her several hours every day. I have an ergo-carrier, which is easy to use and very comfortable, because a lot of the weight is transferred to the hips. They come in a couple of different colors to choose, without flashy patterns. For a newborn you 'd also need an infant insert. It 's not the cheapest option, but I feel my money was well spent. |

Ebay or craigslist in your area...buying them from someone who makes them or used is great so that you can try different styles to see which one is most comfy if you or someone you know can sew, the ringsling and pouch are easy to make |

A good place to start is simply a ring sling. I prefer an unpadded one, but some people prefer a padded one so see if you can test out each of them. You might check if there is a Babywearing International group in your area as you can usually go to their meetings and test out different carriers. I got a Moby D Wrap with my new baby, but I found I didn 't like it. I never felt like he was secure and it was hot. Again though I know that other people love them. I have an Ergo that I use most of the time now as I have misplaced my ring sling. I love using it. I can get so much done and still cuddle with him.
