Weigh loss tips

I have a question about weight loss that may seem like simple math, but when it comes to weigh loss it's not..?
Supposedly, if you burn 3500 calories, you burn 1 pound. So I went on a site that shows how many calories I would burn in a typical day from the activities that I do. So what I figured is that in 24 hours I burn about 5000 calories in a day. Now if I were to eat just 1500 calories in a day, would I lose a pound a day or does it not necessarily work that way? Some people say it all depends what you eat, when you eat, and all that. So does anyone have any opinions about this?
