Anyone who has given up sugar from their diet...how has it benefited you (besides weight loss)?

Question: Anyone who has given up sugar from their diet...how has it benefited you (besides weight loss)?

I'm thinking about giving up or dramatically cutting back on sugar in my diet (mainly the kind from candy, cake, cookies, etc.). Not doing it specifically for weight loss, but more just to see if it improves my general health. I'm curious if anyone else out there has done this for reasons unrelated to weight loss. How did it impact your health? I don't have diabetes, but I do have issues with sleep, fatigue, and other things.

I experienced dramatic benefits from ditching processed foods ........ most of which generally contain some description of processed sugar "to prolong shelf life " ... lol ............ the color came back to my skin, my eyes became visibly clearer and brighter, my energy levels increased enormously, i stopped getting nasty mood swings, my system regulated itself, i stopped getting violent dreams .... i started sleeping much better ....... and i lost a dramatic amount of weight .....processed sugar is nasty muck mate ....... rips the vitamins and minerals right out of your bones ...... wallet emptying, highly addictive, age you before your time, health destroying processed sugar. check out this link ~ rheumatic.org/ sugar.htm Bear in mind though, it 's what you replace it with that really counts....... don 't swap one addiction for another ........ snack on lean sources of protein such as raw nuts and seeds like almonds and brazil nuts (only a handfull or two daily), sunflower seeds mixed with raw vegies such as carrrotts or celery sticks...... all full of fibre and rich in lean protein ....... lean sources of protein will help dramatically to quell cravings for anything. And drink lots of water ....... ditch any sodas, pop, alcohol first cos they 'll just dehydrate you and leach calcium right out of your bones thus contributing to insomnia, headaches and migraines, fatigue and exhaustion, digestive issues, achy bones etc. Start with the sodas, get used to that then move on to junky sugary food ....... don 't try and do it too quickly or the detox will be way too nasty........ sugar is so highly addictive and nearly as hard to ditch as drugs or alcohol....... some will tell you that 's rubbish ....... but that 's likely because they 're still addicted and have never tried to ditch it..... for processed sugar is in nearly everything... even the bread you eat....... i replaced bread with brown rice, lentils, oats, chick peas etc. Very doable though ....... i did it and so can you. peace

I cut it completly out for 2 full months because the doctor told me i had some kind of yeast infection in my body and that not eating sugar would be the only way to get rid of it. I would eat fruit but nothing else with sugar of any kind in it. All that happened what that i became even more skinny. I really noticed no difference in my energy level or overall health. Everyone is different and it very well could give you good health benefits, but it really did not do anything for me. It is difficult too. Almost every food you eat has some kind of sugar added.

It was the best thing that I could have ever done. Mood swings, fatigued, acne, slept less because i slept deeper, lost alot of weight, clearer thinking, calmer, not as easily depressed, muscle aches gone....now, i made the mistake of nibbling on a little of this and that, drinking some fruit juice and soda and before i knew right back to where I started. You don 't realize how bad that stuff really is until you get away from it. It 's difficult at first, but as Minx says, very doable. You body loves good clean food...it thrives on it, but when you feed it the wrong things a defense mechanism kicks in and cause you to be hungry so that you will eat....it saying feed me, feed me, and you eat, eat, eat all the wrong things, because that 's how you started it. So the buzzer constantly goes off everytime you eat junk and it motions you to eat more junk. It 's really saying feed me nutrition, but you 're not doing it...and this is one of the reasons we have soo much obesity, and other health issues...the defense mechanism is there for a reason, we 're just not following proper protocol. So when after eating all that sugar and processed food and you start eating healthier your body will be so happy and will gladly dump that junk and toxic waste from your body and you will feel like crap. But that is when you have the opportunity to feed it what it needs...good, clean, food and it will gladly take it in and thrive on it. It 's a whole lot cheaper, because you won 't need as much food. anyway, good luck...and there is a book that i recommend called "The Sugar Blues " by William Duffy. It 's at Amazon.com Very interesting and informative book.

I have mostly given up the sugar from pop and processed juices by ditching those "foods ". Its very difficult ( for some people ) to give up sugar totally, a drug addict might have more success giving up his habit. I still dump table sugar into tea, blended juices etc. I don 't think consuming moderate amounts of sugar is quite as bad as dairy products and some meats and overly processed foods, especially if one can find sugar in less processed form. Try Stevia as a sugar substitute, I heard its six times sweeter than regular sugar but has more benefits to health.

If you dont have anything wrong with you (illness or disease related) then it probably won 't help much. your body needs sugar for energy, and cutting it completely from your diet most likely only worsen your fatigue and tiredness.

I have limited my intake of sugar after realizing how bad, refined, white sugar is on the body and mind. Simple sugars have been observed to aggravate asthma, move mood swings, provoke personality changes, muster mental illness, nourish nervous disorders, deliver diabetes, hurry heart disease, grow gallstones, hasten hypertension, and add arthritis. The average American consumes an astounding 2-3 pounds of sugar each week. Because sugar is devoid of minerals, vitamins, fiber, and has such a deteriorating effect on the endocrine system, major researchers and major health organizations (American Dietetic Association and American Diabetic Association) agree that sugar consumption in America is one of the 3 major causes of degenerative disease. Eliminating sugar in my diet has caused a decrease in asthmatic symptoms, hives and nervousness - let alone weight loss.

I liked Minx answer. I 've gone on and off of sugar but didn 't change my diet. I 'm going to try again and eat unprocessed foods plus start juicing again since I really don 't care for vedgetables.
